I recently played at/ran a light Beermachine event to both cap off a league (the 15pt games I’ve been playing) and run an Xmas party for my local house-gaming club – Andrew’s Garage Gaming Club Of Awesome*.
*It really is awesome.
It was a reasonably straightforward event, an open-form (play 3+ games against 3+ peoples), single list, 25pt killbox tournament, with bonds (reset each game... get a bond on a 5+, and +1 to your roll for each successive game) and a free reroll for every beer drunk (this didn’t come up all this much – turns out drunk rerolls are hard to remember in game ;p ).
Fun times!
Ready to roll...
I wasn’t sure if I’d end up playing, but it was a good thing I took a list just incase. I had dedicated myself to the idea of taking Discordia, and if I wanted to maximize bonds, that meant Rahn; and playing around with ForwardKommander I came up with this list...
Adeptis Rahn Shyeel
- Discordia
- Manticore
- Manticore
Arcanist
Arcanist
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios
...and it made me happy.
Any of these jacks should be fun with bonds on them. Sure I’m down on having an Arcnode – but crutches are for cripples, and I’m sure I can handle it. I also decided on pEiryss for a change of pace (I can’t remember the last time I took her out), and with such a bricking army of goodness, I felt her different bolts would be fun.
Game One
For my first opponent I was up against the familiar Mr MacBain, and all the fun he entails:
Drake MacBain
- Vanguard (pathfinder bond)
- Mangler
Greygore Boomhowler & Co. (Boomhowler and 5 Grunts)
Kayazy Assassins (Leader and 5 Grunts)
- Kayazy Assassin Underboss
Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist
Orin Mindwinter, Rogue Inquisitor
Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator
He gets first turn and I get no bonds. Sad Panda.
We set up on opposite flanks. He set up Countermeasures on the Kayazy, Fail Safe on the Mangler, and runs to cover the centre. I get my guys up field a little, trying to block any crazy “run right in my face” maneuvers with dual Cover Fire Templates.

He drops his upkeeps, pops his feat on his units, recasts his spells and then splits his advance: scattering into my centre with the Kayazy, and positioning against my flank with Trolls. Rahn ‘takes the bait’ and charges his Kayazy, using Beat Back to engage two. Discordia rolls up, imprints and attempts to shoot through the crowd to kill Gorman – then my opponent reminds me of Counter Measures FACEPALM! Manticores move behind the other two, setting up Covering Fire templates... leaving Rahn tempting my opponent under his ranged protection and focus. Eiryss runs behind his army.

My opponent pushes his position, bringing up the Mangler, Gorman and an Anti-magic Orin. Trolls flank me killing an Arcanist and taking a couple of boxes of the Manticore’s field.

I set up to cripple his offensive this turn. Eiryss activates, shoots MacBain in the back with a disruptor bolt... the Vanguard jumping in the way FACEPALM!!*
Rahn shifts to the left, out of Orin’s Null Magic bubble; drops feat, Chain Blasting a few Kayazy and Force Hammering the Mangler into the forest (and smooshing Orin). Discordia sprays the Trolls (killing two), and the Manticores engage Kayazy and continue with Covering Fire on the other two. The lone Arcanist loitering behind for next turn repairs.
*I can’t believe I forgot Shield Guard... I could have worked around it too :(

My opponent decided to start going for the kill. Stuff happens, but pretty much Reinholdt gives MacBain a reload, and the warcaster then advances on Rahn and pours everything into two fully boosted shots... taking our a fair whack of him, but being unable to seal the deal with his disrupted Vanguard. Gorman shielding them with a Smoke Bomb.

Rahn decides to go for gold. Charging Gorman, Force Blasting the Group apart, smacking MacBain into the wall with a boosted Force Hammer, Disruptor Bolting him with Eiryss, and Discordia killing him with a spray (boosting damage).

WIN
Game Two
Here’s something I haven’t played against in a while, pSorscha:
Kommander Sorscha
- Spriggan
- War dog
Widowmakers (Leader and 3 Grunts)
Winter Guard Mortar Crew (Leader and Grunt)
Winter Guard Mortar Crew (Leader and Grunt)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Kell Bailoch
Orin Mindwinter, Rogue Inquisitor
Widowmaker Marksman
...reminds me of one of my old MkI lists.
My opponent gets first turn and I once again get no bonds. Very Sad Panda :(
This game went much quicker. My opponent put his advance forces in a long line and I moved up in a brick – Polarity shield and imprint up on Discordia, Rahn camping focus; Manticores adding Covering Fire to the mix.

My opponent decided to make a go of things while he could; he walked Sorscha up (Covering Fire unable to touch her, but killing the following War Dog), Tempested Discordia, and then froze my entire army (feat). She followed up with a Boosted Hand Cannon shot, and everything that could shoot at Rahn did – leaving him on an unhealthy five boxes.

Knowing it was do or die time, Rahn shook the Discordia from being frozen, doing the same to himself and standing up. Discordia forfeited its action to stand and walked up to Sorscha. Rahn Force Hammered the jack over her, charged her and hit her with an extra attack. Cleanly taking her out.

WIN
Game Three
And around here it seems no event is complete without a Circle wielding opponent
Morvahna the Autumnblade
- Gorax (Pathfinder bond)
- Pureblood Warpwolf
Shifting Stones
Tharn Bloodtrackers (Leader and 9 Grunts)
- Nuala the Huntress
Druid Wilder
Lord of the Feast
Opponent has first turn, prey on Rahn.
I finally got some bonds: Discordia gets free upkeeps+etc; and a Manticore get’s no knockdown for itself and models in base to base.
PERFECT! ... for last game; Less Sad Panda.
I expect my opponent to come at me fast and he does; so rather than expose myself with in an offensive action I decide to brick up again; I do still manage to snipe a Bloodtracker or two on the first turn though.

So... my opponent encircles me. Not good.

At this point I could probably weather things, staying in my brick. But my innate fear of dogs, and my dislike of preying Bloodtrackers in Rahns back arc get the better of me. I get a line to risky a kill shot on Morvhana: I give the right Manticore two focus; Arcanists concentrate it’s power and give the other Manticore a focus to push it forwards; Rahn then uses telekinesis to place it another two inches forward, and Force Hammers the Pureblood back wards 2 inches. This is too short to knockdown Morvhana; so mission fail. Instead the Manticore walks up to the Pureblood, Force Generates for strength, and hit’s it 3 times at P+S 20... leaving it on 2 boxes. Discordia then follows up, finishing it off with it’s spray. The Pureblood is gone, but I’m completely exposed... :(

My Opponent sinks everything in to killing Rahn. Despite best attempts the Bloodtrackers do nothing but provide the Gorax a projectile to throw at Rhan. Morvhanna then shifts into melee and beats him to death with her sword.

Afterthoughts
If that ain’t the truth.
I’m writing this the morning after, so I’m not sure this post (whenever it turns up on the blog) will be up to the usual level. But that above is the ultimate tautology.
This list was all kinds of fun to play. Not having an Arcnode was a bit of a pain, but it was huge fun working within those limitations. Being able to walk up an exposed Rahn camping focus, with dual Covering Fires is huge fun; as is being able to brick up completely.
I would like to play with it a bit more, but I get the feeling Discordia will really increase the ability of RoS to play a true jack heavy list. The imprint giving us ARM 20 jacks on the advance is pretty huge; especially when it also keeps our Arcanists safe. It took me a little while to get a handle on sprays again though... it’s been a while since I’ve been able to use them, and I always find there’s a little breaking in period between “OMFG! I can shoot a tons of stuff” (which you really can’t) and “with correct positioning my spray kills that important model(s) I couldn’t get to otherwise”. All up it seems a very solid addition to the faction.
I’m just disappointed I didn’t get to use it (or much else) in melee.
If you’re thinking of giving this list a spin though, I would consider swapping pEiryss for Narn. You don’t really need to advance with this list, so removing enemy upkeeps (eEiryss) isn’t that big of a deal (though some will definitely be a pain - pDeneghra); but the extra fast and accurate attacks would definitely be handy... and with Acrobatics he can become an effective part of the brick too.
